Why did Going Merry shut down? We won't make up a reason.
There's an easy story to tell about a scholarship platform getting acquired and later disappearing. Easy doesn't make it true. We haven't found a public company explanation for Going Merry's closure, and a timeline alone can't establish the cause.
An acquisition date isn't an explanation
Earnest announced its acquisition of Going Merry in September 2021. GoBursar later reported a March 2026 closure. Those events are documented at different levels: the acquisition has a company release; the closure account we're citing is third-party reporting. Neither gives us grounds to claim a motive for the shutdown.
Students shouldn't have to investigate to recover their work
Here's the part we do have an opinion on. A scholarship app can hold hours of writing and documents that took days to request. Its exit plan matters. We think a service winding down should provide a clear notice, a usable export, and a way to understand what's been submitted. That is our standard for the category, not a claim that we've audited what Going Merry offered each user.
Ask about leaving before you settle in
When you try a replacement, find the export or download controls while your account is still accessible. Save the sponsor's contact information separately. If a platform can't explain what happens to your work when you leave, we wouldn't make it the only place we store an essay. It isn't a dramatic precaution. It's the same reason you keep a copy of an assignment after submitting it.
